Alocasia

£50.00

Alocasia (Aloe-Case-Sia) are beautiful houseplants that were first discovered in the tropical rainforests of Asia. This plant has beautiful markings and loves a higher humidity than some other houseplants.

Quick Care Tips:

Light: Prefers indirect sunlight.

Water: Allow the top 2" of soil to completely dry between waters, then water and be sure to drain any excess water left as this will create a root rot problem. Mist regularly or place in a more humid room such as a kitchen or bathroom.

Toxicity: Toxic if eaten, so keep out of reach of tiny humans and furry creatures.

Interesting Facts:

This plant gives a signal if it has received too much or too little water. When given too much water, it will “sweat”! The plant carries away the excess water this way, a process called “guttation”.

Alocasia is said to be the plant in all the Western and Eastern versions of the fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk. It thereby stands for seizing opportunities when they arise, even when they’re risky.

Propagating:

Can be propagated through the division method.

Things to look out for:

Overwatering: Stems and leaves can have a mushy appearance and fall off in large quantities. They can also look yellow/ brown in colour.

Underwatering: the leaves and stems can look empty and shrivelled/dried/wilted up and turn yellow/brown in colour.

Other common names for this plant:

- Alocasia Polly
- African Mask Plant
- Elephant Ear Plant
- Amazon Taro
- Dwarf elephant ear
- California plant
- Dwarf taro
- Giant heart plant
