Philodendron (Phil-Oh-DEN-Dren) is an amazing plant that can thrive both outdoors and indoors. It was first discovered in Mexico and the Caribbean.
Up to 80cm in height.
- The word Philodendron actually means "loving tree" in Greek. The name came from the large heart-shaped leaves.
- Philodendrons get most of their water from the air with their aerial roots.
- This plant is great for air-purifying and trapping dust.
Care and tips:
🌞 = Prefers indirect sunlight but will also tolerate lower lit rooms. It will just have a slower growth rate.
💧= Allow top 2 inches of soil to dry between waters, then water and be sure to drain any excess water left as this will create a root rot problem. This plant loves humidity so will be perfect for a bathroom or kitchen.
🐶🐱👶= Toxic if eaten, so keep out of reach of tiny humans and furry creatures!
Easy to propagate, take a stem cutting with leaves and a node (aerial root) attached. Either place in water until roots appear or place straight into soil to root and regrow.
Things to look out for:
Overwatering: Stems and leaves have a mushy appearance and can turn yellow/brown in colour.
Underwatering: If underwatered, the leaves and stems can look empty and shrivelled/dried up.
Other common names for this plant:
- Love heart plant
- Sweetheart plant
- Heart plant
- Love plant
- Green love plant
